Brant has lived in Iowa, Ohio, and Michigan, and currently resides in Detroit. His interest in art dates to his childhood, when his mother taught art in the public schools and painted still-lifes at home. He minored in art in college, but did not pursue it again until about 20 years ago, when he began painting from a live model at the Scarab Club. At the time (90s) there were artists who were generous in giving newcomers helpful coaching. About 10 years ago he began painting with the Michigan Plein Air Painters, and his focus has changed to landscape/cityscape, including both plein air paintings and studio work. He has taken some classes at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center but for the most part is self-taught by painting, looking at art, reading about art, and learning from other artists.

Brant has been juried into numerous competitions locally and awards include the Best of Show, 2009 State Fair, Best of Show at the Lawrence Street Gallery “Think Small” show in 2013, Gold Awards at the Our Town Art Show in Birmingham, 2014, 2015, 2020, a Silver Award in 2017, and second place in the Silver Medal show at the Scarab Club, 2017. He has participated in numerous paint-outs including Dexter, MI, Milford, MI, Glen Arbor, MI, Saginaw, MI, and Canandaigua, NY. In 2019 he was awarded First Place at the Milford paint-out and best in town category at Northport, MI paint-out.
